Cover Art

A couple of weeks ago I saw the first concept art for the cover of Waterborne, my upcoming second novel. It looked terrific and after it goes through a couple more drafts I’ll be able to share it with all of you!

It’s a rare and fascinating occurrence to see art, rendered by a stranger, based on a manuscript you’ve written. It’s a unique type of early reader response to the story. Seeing this, I was reminded readers develop images in their minds as they read. We all do this. Sometimes a film unspools as we read; other times still images are stamped as we consume the words on the page. Readers know what a character looks and sounds like—whether told by the storyteller or not. Most readers don’t ever take up the task of rendering these images, but they are no less important to the reading experience.

I look forward to learning what images Waterborne will create in your mind’s eye this Fall…and how they are similar or different from the images I imagined while writing it—and carry with me still!
