Fourteen Years of Craft Notes

On 19 January 2012 I published my first blogpost on the craft of fiction. I had just started graduate work toward my MFA at Butler University, and I wanted a way to capture and share what I was learning. When I finished my MFA I saw no reason not to keep going with these biweekly tips for those writing or interested in how stories are made. I certainly had no lack of material as I was in the throes of seeking an agent, finishing, and submitting the manuscript of my debut novel to a dozen publishers. I’ll always be grateful to Joelle Delbourgo and George and Karen Porter of Bold Vision Books for partnering with me.

You may have noticed I’ve not sent a blog post since March. The culmination of that lag, which I hope you’ve all spotted in your inbox, is a new quarterly newsletter, “Revel & Rant | A Quarterly Missive on All Things Creative!” The newsletter will be of greater interest to more of you, as it goes well beyond the making of fiction. I hope you enjoy Issue #1.

As I close this last blog post, I simply want to say thank you for reading what was the first iteration of “Revel and Rant.” I certainly enjoyed making it. I’ll return again and again to this archive as it holds all I know on the mechanics of doing creative work. I hope those of you who are working with words will mine it for support as well.
